Caladesi Eclipse Paddle

A Solar Eclipse on the Water

On April 8, 2024, I joined the Pinellas Paddlers for a memorable outing to Caladesi Island, combining a beautiful Gulf Coast paddle with the rare experience of watching a solar eclipse from the water.

Florida was outside the path of totality, but the partial eclipse was still dramatic. With eclipse glasses ready, we paused along the sandbars and shallows to watch the Moon move across the Sun while kayaks, dogs, friends, and bright spring skies surrounded us.

Caladesi was an ideal setting for the day. The shallow clear water, broad sandbars, quiet shoreline, and colorful fleet of kayaks made the trip feel like equal parts paddling adventure, beach gathering, and astronomy outing.
